How to Select the Right Shrink-wrapping Machine Line for Your Product and Speed

How to Select the Right Shrink-wrapping Machine Line for Your Product and Speed

Choosing your shrink-wrapping machine is not only about the catalogue pictures or maximum speed on paper. It is about matching the right technology to your product, real daily output and available space – so that the line runs smoothly day after day.

1 Understand Your Product & Pack Style

Before looking at any model or quotation, start with the basics. The machine must follow your product, not the other way around.

Key questions about the product

  • Are you packing boxes, trays, bottles, cans or pouches?
  • Is the product rigid or flexible? Does it have sharp edges or corners?
  • Is the product heat sensitive (chocolate, cosmetics, certain chemicals)?

Define pack style & size range

  • Individual retail pack or multipack (2x, 4x, 6x, 12x…)?
  • Transport bundle (tray + film, or film only with “bull’s eye” openings)?
  • Minimum and maximum length, width, height and approximate weight.
Practical tip

Before choosing a machine, write down three things: your product type, size range, and pack style. When these are clear on one page, machine selection becomes much easier.

2 Calculate the Real Packing Speed You Need

Machine brochures often show impressive maximum speeds, but your line must be sized for realistic, sustainable output.

Simple way to calculate

  • Daily production target: e.g. 8,000 packs per day.
  • Effective running hours: e.g. 8 hours per day after breaks and changeovers.

Effective minutes per day = 8 × 60 = 480 minutes.
Required average speed = 8,000 ÷ 480 ≈ 17 packs/min.

Add a 10–20% safety factor for stoppages and future growth. In this example, design for around 20–22 packs/min.

L-Bar Sealer

Ideal up to ~10–25 packs/min depending on model.

Best for flexible, mixed-size retail jobs.

Side Sealer

Comfortable from ~20 packs/min upwards.

Suited for continuous, inline operation.

Sleeve Wrapper

6–30 bundles/min depending on layout.

Best for multipacks and transport bundles.

3 Match Requirements to the Main Machine Types

1. L-Bar Sealer + Shrink Tunnel

Best for: individual retail packs, short to medium runs, multiple product sizes on one line.

  • Typical speed: semi-auto ~5–15 packs/min, automatic ~15–25 packs/min.
  • Good choice when presentation and flexibility are more critical than maximum speed.

2. Continuous Side Sealer + Shrink Tunnel

Best for: higher speed lines and products with variable length, integrated into conveyors.

  • Typical speed range: ~20–35, 30–50+ packs/min depending on model.
  • Continuous motion, excellent for inline operation after cartoners or fillers.

3. Sleeve Wrapper + Shrink Tunnel (Bundle Wrapper)

Best for: multipacks and transport bundles – bottles, cans, carton trays.

  • Typical speed: ~6–10 bundles/min (semi-auto), 10–30 bundles/min (automatic).
  • Common in beverage, canned food and wholesale packaging.

4 Decide the Level of Automation

Your operator availability and labour cost will influence whether you select semi-automatic or fully automatic shrink-wrapping.

  • Semi-automatic: operator loads products; machine seals and shrinks automatically.
  • Automatic: products arrive from upstream conveyor; minimal manual handling.
  • Integrated lines: shrink wrapper plus coding, labeling, inspection and palletizing.

Being clear about how many operators you can dedicate will help size the right machine and budget.

5 Film Type, Shrink Tunnel & Layout

Film & Tunnel

  • POF (polyolefin): clear retail appearance, 12–25 microns typical.
  • LDPE: heavy-duty film for bundles, 40–80 microns.
  • Shrink tunnel must match product width, height and required temperature.

Layout & Utilities

  • Measure available space – length, width and height including operator movement.
  • Confirm electrical supply (voltage, phase, available kW) and compressed air (if needed).
  • Plan flow: infeed from table or upstream machine, outfeed to packing table or palletizing.

6 Retrofit vs. New Line – When to Upgrade

If you already have shrink-wrapping equipment, you may not always need a brand-new machine.

  • If the mechanics are still healthy but electronics are obsolete, a retrofit can be very cost-effective.
  • Retrofit may include new PLC & HMI, VFDs, sensors, safety devices and electrical panel rebuild.
  • If the machine cannot meet required speed or is unreliable even after repair, a new line may be justified.
Real-world note A good automation partner should help you decide honestly whether to revive your existing line or replace it – based on total cost of ownership, not just the price of the machine.

7 Summary – A Simple Checklist

When you are ready to talk to a supplier, keep this short checklist in front of you:

  • Clear description of product type and pack style (retail, multipack, transport bundle).
  • Realistic speed requirement in packs or bundles per minute, with safety margin.
  • Preferred machine family: L-Bar, Side Sealer or Sleeve Wrapper (or open to suggestions).
  • Level of automation: semi-automatic, automatic or integrated line.
  • Film type (POF, LDPE) and any restrictions on heat or appearance.
  • Layout sketch with space and utility information.
  • Whether retrofit of an existing line should be evaluated first.
Ready to size a shrink-wrapping line for your factory?

Share your product details, required speed and a few photos of your current setup with your packaging partner. The more accurate the information, the closer the proposed machine will match your real production needs – and the smoother your line will run.
